“There’s no place like home”
Our homes should be the one place where we can kick off our shoes, relax and be completely ourselves. The environment we live in has an impact on our emotions and moods, a cluttered, disorganised space can lead to stress, anxiety and arguments – none of which is good for a joyful life. On the other hand, a home that we feel comfortable in will help us to relax, feel happier and enjoy being in.
Finding Joy with Marie Kondos Method
Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method is a transformative approach to decluttering and organising your home with a focus on making positive decisions about what you keep based on whether the items bring you joy. The method is not about minimalism or having strict rules about how to organise things - the focus is on enabling you to clear the physical and mental space to allow you to enjoy the things you love.
So... before you reach for the black bin bags pause to consider what your ideal lifestyle would be in your home - or as Marie Kondo would say, what your Kurashi ('way of life') is:
Declutter by category and ask what Sparks Joy
When you start decluttering take it one step at a time and work through categories of similar objects (dresses, tops, books, mugs, craft supplies etc). Gather together all the items from the category you're working on so you can see the volume and duplication of similar items you own.
Rather than looking for items to discard focus on making positive choices about what you want to keep:
If not the item can be discarded. For example, if you enjoy watching Netflix as a family and haven't watched a DVD in 2 years - the DVD player & DVDs can go.
It can be surprising to see how much you own if this is the first time you've done this. It was a lightbulb moment for me as I was able to make confident decisions about what to keep and let go, knowing that I was keeping the things that were most important tome.
Creating your joyful home
By consistently choosing to keep the items that spark joy and letting the rest go you'll create more space to appreciate the things you love and it will be easy to keep your home looking and feeling the way you want it to. Imagine...
It's about so much more than just your stuff
By focusing on what sparks joy you'll cultivate a mindset full of abundance and appreciation of what you already have in your life. Creating a home in this way goes further than it just being filled with things you love, it encourages you to focus on the things that are important like relationships, activities and being your authentic self – decluttering is never just about the 'stuff'.
