Set and achieve your goals! It’s time to get intentional!
Well here we are in January and it’s the time to hit reset, time to start a fresh and time to set our New Years resolutions, or intentions as I like to call them. For those of us that have set New Years resolutions, the majority have probably fallen off the resolution wagon by the time February comes. Why is that?
I feel that Intentions are different! Setting intentions is the act of stating what you intend to accomplish through your actions. It's a true commitment to what you want your journey to be about. When you are intentional about something, your focus is int he moment. So whether you call them intentions or goals it becomes about what it is you want to achieve and getting completely clear on the actions you need to take to achieve that thing! Resolutions are far less detailed. We have almost become accustomed to set resolutions just because, knowing we won’t complete them anyway! And where does that leave us? We feel defeated before we’ve even started the year! It’s not great for our mindset is it?
So how do we set goals and intentions! How do we actually put out best foot forward to ensure we actually do ‘Make 2023 our Best Year Yet!’.
Having spent my life setting and achieving goals with upmost purpose, here are my top tips for you to ensure success in your business, life and home, so you can achieve everything you wish for!
A goal is meaningless unless you truly understand why you want to achieve it! “I want more money!” - Why? What will that money do for you, how will it change things for you? “I want better health!” - Why? What will having better health do for you? Will it mean you can get down on your knees and play with your kids, or perhaps you can run the 10Krun you’ve always wanted to do. Why do you want that? What does it mean to you? You see when you truly understand your goal, and when you’ve dug deep to find the answer, this understanding can help when you have those ‘bad’ days and lack motivation. You can remind yourself why you are doing it.
Planning and actioning your goals can feel daunting and overwhelming if you focus too heavily on the year ahead.Working in smaller chunks such as 90 days which can then be broken down further into 30 days chunks and then 7 day chunks, makes them small enough for you not to get distracted or lose focus! If I suggested get fit enough to run a marathon in a month you’d think I was mad, but if I said what about 3km in a month you’d say yes it’s achievable. You have to be able to break the bigger goal down to make it manageable and less scary!
Using a visual method will help you a great deal in accomplishing your goals and intentions. Seeing them in front of you is so powerful. When you look at your goals on a vision board they should spark something in you that drives you to strive for your goals and do whatever it takes to accomplish them. If you see it, you believe it and if you believe it, you can achieve it!
If you write your goals down you are 42% more likely to achieve them than if you don’t. Also its the message you are sending yourself. If you write them down you are reaffirming your commitment to the goals and intentions.
What you do daily will determine whether you reach your goals. Consistent daily action is what will help you to accomplish your goals in the long run. Habits help to keep you accountable and give you structure. When you have structure and understand the small steps you need to take, they can become part of your daily routine. For example, if your goal is to write a book, one of the positive habits you can adopt is to spend 30 minutes a day writing. You couldn’t write the book in a day but you can create better habits to ensure you get there in the long run.
An important step in all this is to review regularly. If you miss this vital step out you miss the opportunity to rectify a situation before its gone potentially wrong, or if its going well you can then do more of that thing! I would always recommend a monthly review and reflection process which doesn’t need to take long but it allows you to cast your eye over your progress and establish the good, the bad and the ugly!
And finally……
So many people get this part confused and see their goals and intentions as a to do list! For example the goal might be to book a holiday in the Maldives (nice though eh?), the to do list is the steps to get you to that goal such as today I will research resorts, next week I will look at flights etc etc! The Goal is the aspirational thing! The to list is your stepping stones!
So whether you have goals, intentions, aspirations or resolutions this 2023, enjoy the process. It’s never a race, small steps speak volumes! You can achieve anything and everything you wish for providing you want it. If you want it you’ll find a way. Set the intention and then start taking action!
