I’ve been a therapist for 14 years, where I’ve supported people with a range of low level and crisis level mental health needs. Within my sessions I use reflective thoughts, self care, coaching, mentoring, CBT, solution focused, and goal settings in my treatment with patients.

When dealing with a mental health condition like depression or anxiety, things can feel out of control and you may have no motivation to clean. Not only can cleaning help you cope, it can also give you a sense of control. It makes you feel like you are in charge and can set yourself goals which will give you the mental health boost that achievements create.

The result of a cleaner home helps reduce stress. There’s real truth in the phrase "tidy home tidy mind". Cleaning is a, excellent form of physical exercise that will trigger the release of endorphins, which are feel-good hormones that can alleviate stress and improve your overall mood.

There’s also evidence that cleaning helps to reduce fatigue, as having clean sheets and making the bed has been proven to give you a better night’s sleep.

The importance of setting goals to help with cleaning and mental health is to make sure your setting achievable goals. It will only make you feel worse if you’ve given yourself a goal that you can’t tick off your list, it results in giving up and feeling like you’ve failed, this greatly impacts your future goals. Remember, each tick off a list is a goal achieved, no matter how small. Just three small jobs a day will boost you to do more and feel good about yourself. Something as simple as making the bed, washing the pots, or hoovering can be enough to elevate your mood.

The sense of community is strong within cleaning accounts. They offer advice, friendship, a shoulder to turn to, and that sense of community can be valuable for achieving goals.

When real connections are made, it reduces our feelings of isolation and often gives people space to talk about how they’re feeling, whether on stories or group. The sharing can help with not feeling alone with your issues, and experiencing a sense of belonging in a wider community.

However, it’s important to be aware of potential disadvantages including the quality of information, competitiveness, and trolling.

My advice would be, be you, be kind and don’t think about numbers, enjoy your account, and love what your post. It’s your account so do it your way and be proud of your content and proud of the way you clean.

And remember if you are trolled, don’t give them your head space with worry and doubt, just report, block and delete!
