"If you don't prioritise yourself, you constantly start falling lower and lower on your list." - Michelle Obama.
First, Think About Your Career
Before we take the 3 steps to refresh our careers, we need to realistically think about our careers right now. Take a moment to think about these questions and look closely at how you answer.
1. Where are you at currently (role, salary, industry)?
2. How do you feel (happy, demotivated, enthusiastic)?
3. What do you want your future to look like (new role, progression, different location)?
Thinking about the ‘here and now’ and recognising how we feel about our career is really important. It pinpoints what direction we want to drive our career into. Without this information, we are less likely to take the big step on our development journey because we’re unsure or feel stuck.
We recommend writing this down - whether it’s in your note app on your phone or in a dedicated development notepad so you can remember why you wanted to refresh your career and skills.
Why Should I Refresh It?
You might be thinking ‘what’s the point of looking at my career in this way?’ or ‘why do I need to refresh it?’
Well, the short answer is -progression!
By reflecting on your career, you might start to see gaps or look into the future and not know where to go. This is why it’s so useful to give yourself a refresher now and again. This can be in the form of refreshing specific skills, your long and short-term goals or your viewpoint on your career.
You will also -
· Be more empowered to take control of your career and create your vision.
· Have increased productivity, creativity, and idea generation both within your day-to-day work and future goals.
· Become a better communicator in the workplace with leaders and your peers because you’ll be more sure of what you want from your career.
Now you know where your career is at and why you want to refresh your skills, let’s look at the 3 steps you can take to kickstart your development journey.
3 Steps You Can Take
1. Goals, goals, goals!
Do something related to your goals weekly. When we repeat an action or read something often, we are most likely to remember it!
So, when we practice, learn, or think about our goals a couple of times a week, we can keep on track with our plans. For example, you want to improve your confidence skills when talking to others or when leading a team or project.
As a result, you join a weekly group dedicated to networking in your career industry, as part of your hobby or you can find a Masterclass or Leadership Programme led by an expert who works with you 1-1 to build your skills.
This can be overcoming Imposter Syndrome, building resilience, mastering difficult conversations or owning our health and wealth.
2. Search For Skill Focused Workshops
No woman is an island so finding a space to develop with like-minded people is a brilliant way to refresh your career skills. This can be in the form of networking, attending a workshop or a dedicated day for skill development.
These are brilliant because they are often led by experts and professionals who have been in the exact position as you and can support you in your career in the best possible way.
We recommend our very own Skills Development Day which brings women across careers and industries to network, build their skills and laugh & learn - together!
3. Find Your Motivation
Everyone has something that triggers their drive and motivates them to pursue their goals and passions so it’s crucial within your development to find yours!
The key to finding your motivation is reflection and awareness. We need to look inwards to understand what we want to achieve by refreshing our careers.
You might want to switch professions because you’re feeling uninspired in your current role or you’ve found you feel uninspired.
Whatever your situation, recognise what your drive is and let it fuel you. Your career development is a brilliant step for every aspect of your life – your skills, confidence, mindset, and motivation! It’s all about prioritising your vision and making it happen.
